Help Relieve Constipation
By Brazos Minshew, TriVita Chief Science Officer

According to the American Journal of Gastroenterology, nearly one-third of the population in North America is suffering from chronic constipation. Additionally, half that amount suffers from constipation alternating with normal bowel movements or even diarrhea.

Interestingly, that is about the same number of people suffering from chronic magnesium deficiency.

How did we get here?
Constipation is infrequent and/or uncomfortable bowel movements. Stool is often hard and dry. This is a very common gastrointestinal complaint.

Constipation has many causes, including:

Not enough water intake
Too little exercise
Certain medicines including pain relievers, antacids and iron supplements
Diabetes
Underactive thyroid
Autoimmune disorders such as lupus
Scarring, tumors and inflammation

Our digestive system becomes more sensitive as we age. Constipation becomes worse with a low-fiber diet, especially a diet high in sugar and fat.

When the problem is immune
Some cases of constipation occur because of a misguided immune system. This may occur with conditions like lupus, as mentioned above, or with other immune dysfunction. Allergies, especially food allergies, are an immune disruption that cause particular distress. Use a rotation diet to test yourself for food allergies. Add nutrients to your daily routine that may help your immune system work smarter, not harder such as probiotics in FloraVita, Essential Fatty Acids in OmegaPrime, Adaptogen 10 Plus, Vital C and Sublingual B-12.

When should I call my doctor?
Call your doctor if you:

Have constipation that lasts longer than 2 to 3 weeks
Have a painful or swollen abdomen, nausea or vomiting
Have signs of an infection, blood in your stool or black stool
Are losing weight

Take Control of Your Health

Eat a healthy, balanced diet that is high in fiber (e.g., unprocessed bran, whole-wheat grains, fresh fruit, and cereals). Eating prunes every day may also improve bowel movements.
Limit your intake of processed and fatty foods.
Exercise regularly.
Drink at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day.
Take a multi-nutrient complex high in magnesium. (Wellavoh contains the Recommended Daily Allowance for the mineral magnesium.)
Do not rush yourself when using the bathroom.
If you feel the urge to move your bowels, do not ignore this feeling. Go to the bathroom right away.
